Maximizing Feed Efficiency in Poultry Production: How LYSOFORTE® Delivers

Feed efficiency sits at the heart of profitable livestock and poultry production. As global demand for poultry protein continues to rise, producers face increasing pressure to convert feed into meat more efficiently while managing ingredient costs and maintaining bird health. Because feed represents the largest cost in operations—often 60–70% of total production expenses—improvements in feed conversion ratio (FCR) can translate into substantial economic gains.

The principles behind feed efficiency are universal across species—animals perform best when they can extract the maximum amount of usable energy and nutrients from every kilogram of feed. Variability in ingredient quality, lipid oxidation, and the digestibility of alternative ingredients can reduce the efficiency with which animals utilize nutrients.

In poultry, these challenges are often amplified by rapid growth rates and short production cycles. This makes the optimization of nutrient digestibility—especially fat—an essential strategy for improving performance and reducing diet cost.

Why Fat Digestibility Is a Critical Lever for Efficiency

Fat is the most energy‑dense component of poultry diets, but it is also the most variable. Factors such as oxidation, free fatty acid content, and the source of the lipid can dramatically influence how well birds digest and absorb dietary fat. When fat is poorly emulsified in the gut, it is less readily absorbed by the bird, which can lead to:

  • Lower metabolizable energy (ME) release
  • Reduced absorption of fat‑soluble vitamins and carotenoids
  • Higher feed conversion ratio
  • Greater nutrient excretion and environmental load

Why LYSOFORTE® and LYSOFORTE® Extend Work

LYSOFORTE® and LYSOFORTE® Extend are built on lysophospholipid‑based emulsification technology designed to improve the efficiency of fat digestion and nutrient absorption. While formulations differ between LYSOFORTE® and LYSOFORTE® Extend, both products leverage three synergistic modes of action:

  1. Enhanced Emulsification: Lysophospholipids have strong amphiphilic properties, allowing them to reduce the size of fat droplets in the gut, providing greater surface area for lipase activity.
  2. Improved Micelle Formation and Stability: Lysophospholipids influence the formation of stable micelles which is essential for transporting digested nutrients across the intestinal wall.
  3. Membrane Modulation for Better Nutrient Absorption: Lysophospholipids can improve intestinal cell membrane fluidity, allowing for better nutrient absorption across the cell membrane.

Together, these modes of action allow birds to extract nutrients efficiently to maintain performance for younger animals, during intestinal challenges, and with different diet matrices. Maximizing feed efficiency is ensuring that every nutrient in the diet is fully utilized. By improving overall nutrient absorption at the digestion and intestinal cell level, LYSOFORTE® and LYSOFORTE® Extend can provide poultry producers with another tool to maximize performance and at the same time support sustainable, profitable production.1,2,3
