9 Recommendations for Growing Broilers During the Summer

There is never a time in broiler production where there aren’t challenges facing producers in some form or fashion.  Many challenges – whether they are nutritional, health, or management related – tend to be seasonal. Fall is typically a favorite season for many producers, lending optimized weather conditions for broiler growth. But hot summer temperatures bring on a new set of obstacles.

Are Your Birds Reaching Their Full Genetic Potential?

Chromium supplementation has been shown to interrupt the biological stress cycle by minimizing the negative effects of stressors — like disease and temperature fluctuations. Broilers experience various stressors every day in production and when a stressor is encountered the neurogenic system is activated causing stress hormones to be released. By interrupting the stress cycle with chromium, broilers are able to perform better and reach their genetic potential through improved feed conversion ratio (FCR), increased breast meat yield and better livability.

Exploring the Impact of Stress on Livability

In poultry integration, pullet and broiler livability can have a huge impact on how an integrator manages the number of pullets placed or number of eggs set, respectively, in order to meet the needs of their customers (e.g. pounds of meat out of the plant). Pullet livability can have an impact on the overall cost of production, in that if disease or management is not able to maintain livability, producers would take on additional costs, such as buying eggs or replacing pullets that have been lost.
