Kemin is The Science Behind Ruminant Nutrition

Kemin specializes in advanced molecular science and uses this expertise to unlock discoveries and create nutritional ingredient solutions to support the health of dairy cattle. As a proud sponsor of the 2020 Cornell Nutrition Conference, we invite you to watch Dr. Michael Ballou’s presentation Nutraceuticals: An Alternative Strategy for the Use of Antimicrobials. For more valuable insights into dairy health and ruminant nutrition, please explore the literature, articles and other resources below.

About nutraceuticals in ruminant animals

Nutraceuticals are a broad group of compounds that can be classified in several ways. Some of the more common classifications are based on the mechanism of action, chemical nature or feed source. Dr. Ballou discusses the general mechanisms of action of common nutraceutical classes that are currently available to be used in ruminant animals.

About Dr. Ballou

Michael Ballou, Ph.D. is the professor and chair of the Department of Veterinary Sciences in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech University. His research program is focused on understanding how nutrition and management influence the health of calves, heifers and transition cows.

  • CLOSTAT® contains a unique, patented spore-forming strain of Bacillus subtilis PB6. With a known mode of action and over 15 years of research in livestock and poultry across the globe, PB6 has proven efficacy against clostridia and other pathogenic species.*
  • KemTRACE® Chromium is a highly bioavailable, organic source of chromium that helps improve glucose utilization for increased cellular energy and function. This results in better animal maintenance, reproduction, growth and immunity.
  • Aleta is highly bioavailable, offering a concentration greater than 50% of 1,3-beta glucans. Aleta provides a consistent response in situations of disease and stress — especially those typically addressed with antibiotics.
  • KALLSIL is a zeolite mineral clay used to support performance by reducing the harmful effects of naturally occurring fungal metabolites found in feed. By absorbing moisture from feed, KALLSIL also reduces caking, resulting in improved flow in feed and feed ingredients.
  • Ultra CURB® Liquid and Dry mold inhibitors are both highly concentrated blends of four powerful organic acids. The combination of acids is designed to target wild yeast growth, in addition to mold growth, to reduce total mixed ration (TMR) heating.
