ButiPEARL – Encapsulated Butyric Acid for a Healthy Swine and Poultry Gut

ButiPEARL, an encapsulated source of butyric acid for swine and poultry, is manufactured using a proprietary spray freezing process. MicroPEARLS® spray freezing technology allows for targeted release all along the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, promoting an efficient use of butyric acid in swine and poultry. The Role of Butyric Acid for Swine and Poultry

Butyric acid is one of the short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) most efficiently used by the epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Butyric acid promotes the growth of tissues lining the GI tract and development of the intestinal epithelium in monogastric animals.1,2 With the industry shift to reduce antibiotic use, encapsulated butyric acid has become a first-choice antibiotic alternative for broiler, layer, turkey and swine producers. Delivery of butyric acid to the small intestine can improve the tight junctions, strengthening the intestinal barrier with upregulation of tight junction proteins. By strengthening the barrier and aiding in barrier recovery, encapsulated butyric acid can reduce the negative impact of environmental and pathogenic challenges.

MicroPEARLS® Technology – Delivering Encapsulated Butyric Acid for Optimum Utilization

A fat matrix encapsulates the butyric acid ensuring the MicroPEARL is not digested; it is the delivery system for the active material. Particles of butyric acid salt are embedded in the MicroPEARLS matrix during the manufacturing process. Particles are released in the presence of an aqueous environment, leaving holes to new, unexposed particles.

Liquid enters the MicroPEARL through exterior holes, where it then comes into contact with the other particles of butyric acid. These particles are then released, leaving new holes as liquid contacts them. In the end, the MicroPEARLS look like empty shells. The released material disassociates into butyric acid and calcium. The butyric acid can then be utilized to support efficiency, performance and growth all along the intestinal tract of pigs, broilers, layers and turkeys.

Product Specifications

ButiPEARL inclusion rate in feed is 0.6–1.0lbs per ton for broilers, layers and turkeys. For swine, ButiPEARL should be included in diets at 0.6–3.0lbs per ton. ButiPEARL is packaged in 25 kg bags or in 1,000kg totes. Store in a cool, dry place not exposed to sunlight to maximize the 18-month shelf-life.

Butyric Acid Supplementation Exhibits Positive Impact on Production Performance of Broilers

 

This trial was conducted with broiler chickens to determine the effect of feeding an encapsulated source of butyric acid, ButiPEARL, in broiler diets from 1 to 42 d of age. ButiPEARL was included in diets at 100g, 200g and 300g and each level showed an improvement in feed conversion ratio over the control diet.

Feeding Higher Levels of Encapsulated Source of Butyric Acid Exhibits Additional Production Performance in Broilers

 

Broilers supplemented with an encapsulated source of butyric acid, ButiPEARL, at increasing inclusion levels saw a linear upward trend which included an increase in body weight gain and improvement in feed conversion compared to control diets at the end of 42 days.

The Effect of Encapsulated Butyric Acid in Nursery Pig Performance

 

This trial was conducted to determine the effects of an encapsulated butyric acid (ButiPEARL) in the nursery phase of pig production in a large scale wean to finish barn setting. The results indicate that ButiPEARL is effective as a means of improving efficiency of pigs in the nursery phase.

Effect of Feeding Encapsulated Butyric Acid in Swine Diets Containing Reduced Lactose Levels on the Growth Performance of Nursery Pigs

 

The study evaluated the effects of feeding encapsulated butyric acid on nursery diets with reducing levels of lactose on the growth performance of weaning pigs. Results indicated encapsulated butyric acid could improve the efficiency of pigs with lower lactose diets.

Impact of Various Acid Treatments During the Nursery Period

 

This trial tested treatments with ButiPEARL, KEM-GEST or both on body weight gain for nursery pigs. The trial indicated the inclusion of Kemin products helped produce heavier pigs after the 5-week period.
