Choline: The Liver's Lipid Guardian

Choline functions as a lipotropic agent, promoting the transport and oxidation of fats in the liver. It helps prevent fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) by enabling the synthesis of very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), which remove excess fat from hepatocytes. Additionally, choline donates methyl groups that support lipid metabolism, antioxidant defense (via glutathione synthesis), and cellular membrane integrity through phosphatidylcholine production.

FLHS accounts for up to 40% of mortality in caged laying hens and is linked to poor liver fat metabolism (Shini et al., 2019).
