Kem LAC™ LB 500

Quality roughage forms the foundation of a good nutritional programme for ruminants. Adequate roughage consists of the maximum digestible energy and protein available to meet the needs of high-producing ruminants. The effective forage management of home-grown hay and silage is crucial to running an effective, profitable farm. Ineffective forage harvesting and storing represent a significant source of economic loss.

Why? Because the growth of moulds and microbes (e.g. fungi and wild yeast) can drastically affect the quality of forage.

When crops are harvested with an ideal moisture concentration, silage inoculants can help to enhance fermentation. Excessive microbial growth can cause increased dry matter loss and heating of forage, which reduces dry matter and crude protein digestibility.

However, to combat these issues, Kemin has created several effective preservatives for high moisture forage to inhibit microbial growth in silage.

The Role Kem LAC™ LB 500 Plays in Forage Management & Enhancing Aerobic Stability of Silage

Kemin's Kem LAC™ LB 500, a water-soluble mixture of two bacterial strains, can be used in a wide variety of forages chopped for ensiling. This inoculant blend was specifically formulated to enhance aerobic stability of ensiled crops and speed up silage fermentation.

How Kem LAC™ LB 500 works

Kem LAC LB 500 is designed to reduce the pH of silage and accelerate the rate of fermentation, through production of lactic acid. This is achieved by Lactobacillus plantarum. Lactobacillus buchneri, on the other hand, assists in the production of acetic acid, which inhibits growth of moulds and unfavourable bacteria during feeding out, ensuring aerobic stability of the silage.

Benefits of Kem LAC™ LB 500

  • Multi-crop silage inoculant: maize, sorghum/ feed-sorghum, lucerne/ legume, small grain, haylage.
  • Offers enhanced aerobic stability.
  • Accelerates the rate of fermentation.
  • Provides excellent nutrient retention.
  • Controls silage temperatures in the bunker or silo bag.
  • Helps reduce silage loss or shrinkage.
  • Highly soluble for easy mixing.
