Purogene® Potato and Purogene® Professional Potato

Chlorine Dioxide Solution for Potato Post-Harvest and Storage Sanitation

Purogene® Potato and Purogene® Professional Potato are liquid chlorine dioxide solutions developed by Kemin Bio Solutions to deliver fast-acting, broad-spectrum microbial control for post-harvest and storage sanitation in potato operations. Formulated with stabilized sodium chlorite and activated with a food-grade GRAS acid, these solutions generate chlorine dioxide —a powerful oxidizer effective against key storage pathogens such as Phytophthora infestans (Late Blight), black rot, soft rot, and other tuber disease-causing organisms.

Kemin’s solutions are engineered for precise, controlled activation, generating free chlorine dioxide on-site using manual or automated dosing systems. This tailored approach ensures optimal chlorine dioxide performance—maximizing antimicrobial impact while minimizing chemical waste and equipment corrosion.

Available in two concentrations and compatible with automated systems, Purogene Potato and Purogene Professional Potato support efficient and scalable microbial control strategies that help protect tuber quality, reduce spoilage, and extend storage shelf life.

Mode of Action

When activated, Purogene Potato and Purogene Professional Potato generate chlorine dioxide (ClO₂)—a potent oxidizer that selectively targets and disrupts microbial cells.¹

Chlorine dioxide penetrates cell walls and oxidizes proteins, enzymes, and nucleic acids, interfering with essential metabolic processes and leading to cell death.² Its neutral charge and small molecular size make it highly effective against storage pathogens and other tuber disease causing organisms.³

Free chlorine dioxide, the unbound and bioactive form in solution, delivers rapid kill and residual antimicrobial activity. It stays active longer than many sanitizers, providing continued protection and reducing the risk of microbial rebound in storage environments.¹,⁴
