Dip Treatment – Best Practices for Greenhouse Growers to Control Pests and Start Clean

Posted October 31, 2024 by Tatiana Giacinti, Product Manager

Maintaining healthy, pest-free plants is a top priority for greenhouse growers. But pests like spider mites, thrips, and whiteflies often threaten this goal. Implementing an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program is vital for preventing and managing infestations, and dip treatments play a crucial role in this approach.

In this post, we’ll dive into the best practices for using a botanical oil-based dip treatment and explain why following a structured process is essential for safeguarding your plants. By implementing these strategies, you’ll not only combat pests but also promote healthier growth in your greenhouse.

Tips for Effective Dip Treatment and Greenhouse Pest Management

1. Use Clean Water for Maximum Efficacy

One of the most important factors in a successful dip treatment is the quality of the water used. The water must be free from contaminants such as chlorine or iron. These impurities can affect the performance of the biopesticide, reducing its ability to eliminate pests effectively.

Using clean, uncontaminated water ensures that the active ingredients in Romivex DIP are fully available to target pests and promote plant health. If possible, use filtered or distilled water to avoid any unwanted chemicals that might interfere with the treatment.

2. Prepare Fresh Dip Solutions Regularly

To ensure consistent performance, it’s essential to prepare a fresh treatment solution after every 3,000 cuttings. As the solution becomes exposed to plant material and air, it can lose potency. A fresh batch maximizes the effectiveness of the dip in controlling pests such as spider mites and whiteflies.

Additionally, avoid preparing a large volume of dip solution ahead of time. The dip mixture should be used immediately after preparation for the best results. Storing the solution for future use will diminish its efficacy, which could leave your plants vulnerable to pest infestations.

3. Keep Continuous Agitation

When submerging your plant material in the dip solution, continuous agitation is key to preventing the product from settling. Agitating the solution keeps the active ingredients evenly distributed, ensuring that each cutting or plug receives the same level of treatment. Regularly stirring or moving the tray while dipping the plants helps maintain the dip's efficacy throughout the process.

4. Submerge Cuttings Thoroughly

For optimal pest control, submerge the cuttings in the dip solution for 15 to 60 seconds, or until the water stops bubbling. The bubbling indicates that air is escaping from the plant material, allowing the biopesticide to make direct contact with the pests. This step is crucial, as pests must remain in contact with the solution long enough to ensure they are effectively eliminated.

5. Ensure Proper Draining and Airflow

After completing the dip, it’s important to allow the cuttings to drain properly. Do not stack the treated cuttings on top of each other. Instead, arrange them to allow for adequate airflow and drying. Proper draining ensures that the cuttings remain healthy and free from any moisture-related diseases.

6. Protect Cuttings from Extreme Temperatures

Environmental factors, such as temperature, can impact the effectiveness of your dip treatment. Protect your cuttings from direct sunlight during and after treatment, keeping the temperature around 60-70°F. If the temperature exceeds 90°F, the plants could experience adverse effects, and the dip treatment might not work as intended. Maintaining the right temperature ensures the dip solution stays effective while protecting the cuttings from stress caused by extreme heat.

By following these best practices for using a rosemary oil-based biopesticide, you'll effectively manage pests and create a healthier environment for your plants. Ensuring clean water, preparing fresh solutions, and following proper submerging and draining methods will maximize the effectiveness of your treatment, helping your plants grow strong and pest-free.
