Cultivating the Future: Kemin’s Commitment to Living History Farms and Agricultural Education

Posted May 28, 2025 by Megan Boettcher, WW Digtal Communications Specialist

At Kemin Industries, our mission to transform lives extends beyond the laboratory and into the heart of our communities. One of the most meaningful ways we live out this mission is through our long-standing support of Living History Farms, a cultural and educational gem in Urbandale, Iowa. This partnership reflects our deep roots in agriculture and our commitment to inspiring future generations.

A Shared Legacy of Innovation and Education

Founded just a few miles and a few years apart, Kemin Industries and Living History Farms share a common origin story grounded in agricultural innovation. While R.W. and Mary Nelson were launching Kemin as a feed additive company, Dr. William Murray was envisioning a living museum that would bring the story of American agriculture to life. Today, that shared vision continues to flourish at the Kemin Cultivation Center, a transformative initiative that is reshaping the museum into a year-round destination for learning and discovery.

The Kemin Cultivation Center: A New Era Begins

On May 1, 2025, Living History Farms celebrated the grand opening of the Kemin Cultivation Center. This state-of-the-art facility more than doubles the museum’s indoor space and includes a climate-controlled exhibit hall, accessible amenities, and a new visitor center. It also houses the MarketPlace Museum Store and administrative offices, creating a welcoming gateway for thousands of annual visitors.

The Center’s first exhibits—“Immigrant Letters, Oceans Apart” and “Moving Day”—invite guests to explore the personal stories and journeys that shaped Iowa’s agricultural heritage. Just outside, the new MidAmerican Energy Foundation Pavilion offers a shaded space for school groups and families, further enhancing the museum’s educational offerings.

A Family Tradition of Giving Back

Kemin’s support for Living History Farms is deeply personal. Mary Nelson, Kemin’s co-founder, grew up on a farm in rural Iowa and served on the museum’s board from 2002 to 2010. Her passion for preserving agricultural history and promoting innovation continues to inspire our philanthropic efforts. The Nelson family and The Nelson Foundation remain steadfast supporters of the museum’s mission to educate and engage the next generation.

“As each generation moves further from the land and our food supply continues to face new challenges, understanding where food comes from is more important than ever,” said Dr. Chris Nelson, President and CEO of Kemin Industries. “We are honored to support the Cultivation Complex, which will ignite curiosity and inspire future leaders in agriculture.”

At Kemin, we believe that understanding our past is essential to shaping a better future. Our partnership with Living History Farms is a reflection of that belief—and a celebration of the enduring power of education, innovation, and community.
