25 Years of Sustainable Rosemary

Kemin developed one of the first rosemary breeding programs in 1996, elevating rosemary from a Mediterranean shrub to a high-performance phytochemical manufacturing plant designed to keep food fresher, safer, and more flavorful.

Today, our rosemary is formulated into thousands of effective clean label solutions.

Innovation in Rosemary: From Farm to Shelf

Advanced Clonal Lines

All of our rosemary plants are genetically identical, which allows us to minimize raw material variability and efficiently grow and extract active molecules.

Conventional Plant Breeding

We cross pollinate our plants via conventional plant breeding to continuously develop new and improved populations. Over the last 25 years, we've doubled the amount of target molecules in our rosemary biomass.

Innovative Extraction Process

We isolate rosemary's active molecules via an innovative extraction process to produce our high-quality extract. The extract is then standardized with sunflower oil and incorporated into our oxidation control solutions.

Continuous Innovation

Our scientists are continually discovering novel plant-based molecules while our growers develop new methods to produce the most effective crops.

Certified Sustainably Grown

Our rosemary crops are Certified Sustainably Grown by SCS Global, a certification that recognizes leadership in environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic stability.

The History of Kemin Rosemary

In the late 1990s, rosemary was primarily wild harvested from its native environment in southern Europe and North Africa. Kemin quickly realized that wild harvesting could harm the plant's natural ecosystem and was not sustainable. We developed one of the first rosemary breeding programs in 1996 by analyzing and selecting the most potent lines of rosemary from around the globe. Using conventional plant breeding methods, our Specialty Crops team developed one of the largest collections of rosemary in the world.

In 2016, Kemin published a peer-reviewed scientific paper determining that while carnosic acid generates the most antioxidant activity in rosemary, 50% of this activity remains without carnosic acid. These findings indicated that all molecules in the rosemary extract are essential to provide full protection in food matrices.

Growing Sustainable Rosemary

Rosemary Applications

Kemin rosemary is integrated into formulations that help keep products fresh by controlling oxidation, extending shelf life and enhancing flavor.

Demand for sustainable products with simple labels and natural ingredients has skyrocketed in recent years. According to Mintel, nearly half of U.S. consumers feel a strong sense of responsibility to live more sustainably.*

Kemin services work together to ensure our products are applied at the optimal rate to control oxidation and maintain shelf life in our customers’ final products. Our Technical Services Managers (TSMs) recommend products and application rates, Our Customer Laboratory Services (CLS) team tests for active levels and our Kemin Application Services (KAS) engineers ensure customers properly apply Kemin product at their facilities.
