A research model designed to evaluate the survival of important viral pathogens of livestock in animal feed ingredients imported into the U.S. is providing further evidence that contaminated feed ingredients may indeed represent a risk.

It is well established that feed and feed ingredients are possible transmission route for pathogens. With many producers evaluating the risk of internationally-sourced ingredients and feed contamination, chemical mitigants are being considered as part of a comprehensive biosecurity program – with formaldehyde and medium chain fatty acids being amongst them. Numerous discussions and ongoing research are focusing on certain product categories. But, which product form – liquid or dry – offers better efficacy against pathogens in feed?
Multiple studies have been completed showing the benefit of medium chain fatty acid (MCFA) inclusion in nursery pig diets. A 42d study was completed to evaluate a proprietary C8:C10 MCFA blend (MCFA blend) on nursery pig performance. Pigs fed MCFA blend had improved body weight, average daily gain, average daily feed intake and feed conversion over the 42-day duration of the study.
Over the years, MCFA have been well researched and have been shown to have antimicrobial properties against gram (+) and gram (-) bacteria, as well as viruses. MCFA are amphipathic, having hydrophilic and hydrophobic characteristic, similar to the phospholipid bi-layer of the cell membrane. Due to this similarity, they are able to insert themselves into the bi-layer of the membrane.
The nature of feed manufacturing has evolved from locally-sourced to globally-sourced feed ingredients; this means that some ingredients may originate from regions where disease outbreaks are active. With an increasing awareness of emerging animal diseases and their ability to cross national boundaries, there is a greater need for vigilance and improving methods of mitigating risk in the global economy.
Under the conditions of this study, the “ice block” challenge model successfully infected pigs with all three viruses. This large scale, field-based model demonstrated the risk of contaminated feed as a vehicle for viral transmission to pigs. Both formaldehyde and a medium chain fatty acid blend were effective at preventing transmission of all three viruses through feed in this model. Additionally, performance of pigs in the formaldehyde and medium chain fatty acid blend treatments were significantly improved compared to the positive control pigs.
