Protein sources are often heat-treated to increase the supply of rumen undegraded protein (RUP), but this can render proteins or amino acids undigestible or un-usable by the cow. Among the 10 essential amino acids, lysine is extremely vulnerable to being altered or destroyed during heating in what is known as a browning or Maillard reaction. When this Maillard reaction happens, the lysine you purchased is wasted. This makes it difficult to meet MP Lysine requirements, get the milk yield you expect and maximize your herdâ€™s production without overfeeding costly feed protein.
Just how variable are high RUP protein sources? Kemin Industries has tested over 70 blood meal samples using the In Vitro Nitrogen Indigestibility Assay (IVNIDA) developed by Ross et al. (2013). In this assay, nitrogen digestibility is used to evaluate the availability of the protein supplied by the blood meal. Additionally, intestinal availability of the lysine contained in the RUP (MP Lysine) is determined. The results of this testing indicated that the amount of MP Lysine supplied by blood meal ranged from 41 to 1 grams per pound.
When comparing the cost of the MP Lysine supplied by these 70 blood meal samples to that of USA LysineÂ®, it is evident that even when blood meal is at $750 dollar/ton, USA Lysine is extremely cost-effective, supplying MP Lysine at a lower cost than most of the blood meal samples. Compare the cost of about $0.016 gram from USA Lysine to that of blood meal ranging from $0.009 all the way up to $0.313/gram. Buying blood meal from a single source did little to reduce the variability. In the figure below, the samples in black are all from the same feed mill collected over a period of one month. The cost per gram from these samples ranged from $0.014 all the way up to $0.38.

Not only is USA Lysine cost-effective, it provides a consistency that commodity proteins canâ€™t match. USA Lysine supplies over 200 grams of MP Lysine per pound compared to the 41 to 1 grams per pound in blood meal. This variability not only impacts the cost per gram of MP Lysine, but it also means un-met requirements that impact the production, health and reproduction performance of your herd.
Providing 8 times more MP Lysine than the average blood meal, and almost 2 times more than the nearest rumen protected lysine competitor day after day, makes USA Lysine the most consistent, concentrated, cost-effective source of MP Lysine available. This means the ability to more consistently meet your cowsâ€™ MP Lysine requirements at known costs, resulting in improved production and increased profit.
