As we age, our visual health may naturally decline, leading to poor vision. Some people also suffer from various eye conditions due to family history or lack of eye protection in their youth. One of the factors that negatively impacts eye health is overexposure to harmful wavelengths of blue light. Blue light is a component of visible light and everyone is exposed to it both indoors and outdoors. Nearly every source of light - whether natural or artificial - emits blue light.1-2
With the increasing popularity of digital devices, eyes are exposed to blue light at ever-increasing levels. Overexposure can lead to short-term and long-term vision damage.3 FloraGLO Lutein is the first lutein brand to use a U.S. blue light patent to filter blue light from the eyes.3 Formulating eye health vitamins or supplements with FloraGLO offers the naturally-sourced lutein we need each day.5
What is lutein?
Lutein (LOO-teen), often paired with zeaxanthin (zee-uh-zan-thin), is an important carotenoid that the human body uses to protect the eyes and keep them performing at their best - through every stage of life. These nutrients are found in the human diet in a variety of fruits and vegetables, namely in dark, leafy greens.6 Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only dietary nutrients selectively deposited in the eyes, specifically, in the macula lutea to create a protective layer known as macular pigment.7-9 Macular pigment is the eyes' natural defense against harmful blue light.
Lutein and zeaxanthin protect the eyes by acting as powerful antioxidants to prevent damage from free radicals.
The human body can't produce lutein or zeaxanthin on its own, and these nutrients can decrease with age, which leaves older eyes unprotected and vulnerable to damage.10 So it's important that we replenish our lutein and zeaxanthin levels daily through diet and supplementation.
Green, leafy vegetables like spinach, kale or broccoli provide the best food sources of lutein, but many people don't eat enough of these foods. Most individuals’ diets only provide about 0.5-4.0 mg lutein per day.11
Why do we need lutein?
One of the main culprits that negatively impacts eye health over time is overexposure to harmful wavelengths of blue light. Blue light is a component of visible light and everyone is exposed to it. Nearly every source of light - natural or artificial - emits blue light.12, 13 In fact, our eyes are exposed to it all day long, both indoors and out, and at ever-increasing levels. Your eyes can't filter blue light on their own, and overexposure may lead to poor vision.14, 15
Regardless of your age, supplementing with lutein can protect your eyes from blue light and keep your vision sharp for a lifetime.
Protection for the Developing Infant Brain
As early as 17 to 22 weeks of gestation, lutein is present in the retina of the fetus.16, 17 During pregnancy, lutein levels in the mother's bloodstream increases while other carotenoids remain constant.18 The same differential pattern for increased lutein over other carotenoids is also present in cord blood and breast milk, indicating lutein is part of the optimal nutrition necessary for the developing baby.19
Unfortunately, the typical diet often doesn't provide expectant mothers with all of the nutrients her developing baby's brain needs for healthy development.10 Lutein's importance for infant development may be related to its well-known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Prenatal and infant nutrition products containing FloraGLO can support nutritional needs for neural development and protection.
Children and Cognitive Performance
New research points to lutein's role in cognitive performance support during childhood. Macular pigment optical density (MPOD) - the measure of lutein status in the eye - and cognitive performance20, memory21 and academic achievement22 may be correlated.
Adult Brain Health
Brain functions like processing speed and working memory can decline with age.23 Lutein may help individuals maintain brain health and function by protecting the brain from oxidative stress and inflammation.
Kemin uses only the best growing and harvesting practices to cultivate its elite dietary ingredients. Our proprietary lutein manufacturing process has been developed and refined over the last 20 years.
Our marigold flowers are grown in India, meticulously handpicked, dried, pelleted and extracted resulting in marigold oleoresin. Marigold oleoresin, which complies with strict specifications, is shipped to Kemin headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa where it is further processed into unesterified (free) FloraGLO Lutein.
Each step of the manufacturing process is carefully controlled to ensure that the naturally-sourced lutein is not degraded, maintaining its quality and consistency.
FloraGLO was the first lutein brand introduced into the global marketplace and has maintained its status as the gold standard for over two decades. FloraGLO was the chosen lutein ingredient in the largest lutein supplementation trial to date, the prestigious Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) by the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute.25
Science backed, not borrowed
The efficacy of FloraGLO Lutein is unparalleled, as compared with other lutein brands and as demonstrated in human clinical trials time and time again. The global vitamin and dietary supplement market relies on clinical evidence in order to differentiate products in the market place. It's critical for manufacturers to formulate with ingredients that have clinical evidence to substantiate health benefits, which is why so many choose FloraGLO.
Superior absorption and bioavailability
FloraGLO lutein helps increase MPOD (the measurement of macular pigment density in the macula.) FloraGLO has also shown to help maintain MPOD with aging.
FloraGLO lutein is the same free-form found in common fruits and vegetables.
This free-form lutein is easily absorbed by the body to keep our eyes healthy and functioning at their best.
FloraGLO Lutein in a powder form is produced with DSM's Actilease® microencapsulation technology, a proprietary process that combines superior bioavailabity, excellent stability and very low extrusion losses - providing lower overages and smaller tablets.
Researchers, eye care professionals and leading vitamin manufacturers from around the globe rely on the consistent quality, safety and proven efficacy profile of FloraGLO Lutein to create eye health vitamins with lutein.
