MetiPEARL™ - Rumen Protected Methionine
Encapsulated Methionine is Changing the Way Dairy Cows are Fed
Methionine is one of the first two limiting amino acids for milk and milk component production in North American dairy diets. It is an essential amino acid used as a building block for proteins, therefore, meeting your cow's methionine requirements is fundamental to the health and wellness of the dairy cow. Forages, feedstuffs and dietary intakes are extremely variable in the amount of metabolizable methionine (MP Methionine) supplied, which can negatively impact milk and milk component production.
MetiPEARL™ combines ruminal escape with high intestinal digestibility, resulting in one of the most cost-effective sources of MP Methionine for dairy cattle on the market. Meeting MP Methionine requirements using a rumen protected form can help optimize production and allow for greater flexibility when formulating rations. MetiPEARL is encapsulated using the company's proprietary MicroPEARLS® spray freezing process, which delivers the nutrients to the right place at the right time.
Keys for Selecting the Best Rumen Protected Methionine
First, product efficacy needs to be verified. Kemin has completed research to validate MetiPEARL efficacy. A bioavailability trial was conducted at the University of Delaware in which MetiPEARL and USA Lysine® were fed and their bioavailability values were calculated. This trial indicates MetiPEARL has a bioavailability of 30.5 percent, which means for every 100 grams of MetiPEARL fed, 30.5 grams of MP Methionine are supplied. On a per pound basis, this calculates to almost 139 grams of MP Methionine, which is more than what is calculated by nutritional software programs.
Download the PDF, "Evaluation of the Bioavailability of USA Lysine and MetiPEARL in Lactating Dairy Cows," to learn more.
Next, you need to compare the rumen protected methionine products available on the market. Kemin recommends examining the following product characteristics:
- Methionine concentration: Percent (by weight) of the product that is methionine
- Rumen escape: Percent of the methionine contained by the product that is undegraded in the rumen
- Intestinal availability: Percent of undegraded methionine in a form available for absorption in the intestine of the animal
- Metabolizable methionine (MP Methionine): Percent of the total methionine contained in the product available and utilized by the animal
(100% x Rumen Escape % x Intestinal Availability % = Metabolizable Methionine %)
After comparing these product characteristics, determine what really matters: cost per gram of MP Methionine.

Delivering the Same Nutritional Value at a Lower Cost
High rumen escape alone does not deliver an adequate volume of available methionine to the cow. Each characteristic (methionine concentration, rumen escape, intestinal availability and metabolizable methionine) must be considered when determining which product provides the most cost-effective supply of MP Methionine. When taking these characteristics into account, MetiPEARL is a cost-effective source of MP Methionine.
See the table below for a price comparison of the rumen protected methionine products available in the market.
