Kemin Leadership Team
Kemin Industries Inc. is a wholly owned family company established by R.W. and Mary Nelson in 1961. The board of directors is composed of four members, all active in the corporation: R.W. Nelson, Chairman; Chris Nelson, CEO; Mary Nelson, World Wide Corporate Vice President; Libby Nelson, Secretary.
R.W. and Mary initially formed the company to serve customers in the agriculture industry who were interested in improving the quality of their feed. The founders, still active in the business today, began by serving the animal feed market with ingredients such as antioxidants, flavors and mold inhibitors.
Continuing the Family Tradition
In 1980, now President and CEO Dr. Chris Nelson — R.W. and Mary’s son — joined Kemin as Research & Development (R&D) Director in Europe. Having just completed his Ph.D., Chris joined Kemin and introduced a structured approach to research and development. He returned to Des Moines in 1983 to lead R&D efforts in North America and oversee the building of a new innovation center. In 1994, Dr. Nelson became President of Kemin North America and R.W. became Chairman.
In 2001, R.W. and Mary’s daughter, Libby, became the company’s General Counsel and Secretary. She supports all business units globally with regulatory and legal matters, transactional matters, oversees the patent and trademark portfolio, and supports the regulatory and intellectual property functions for R&D projects.
David Nelson joined the Board of Advisors for Kemin Industries, Inc. in 2014. Dave is a real estate developer and operates a property management company in southern Indiana and northern Kentucky.
Kemin is currently composed of 14 independent operating units, each with their own president. Together, they provide more than 500 ingredients to serve our customers and provided net sales of $585 million in 2014.
It is from this one very local company that our present-day global corporation emerged. The 14 business units are bound together by the shared vision to improve the quality of life by touching half the people of the world every day with Kemin products and services.
Every investment we make, whether it is in research, talent, or acquisition, is to achieve our vision. Kemin leadership, as well as every employee, is dedicated to bringing the benefits of molecular science to a growing population.
The Kemin Vision
Improving health, feeding a growing population, protecting our resources, and being a resource for others in need . . . these comprise our purpose. They’re our passion. They’re what move us forward and drive us constantly to do more. They’re about touching lives and improving life.
And as we see our world continue to change and grow, we continue to change, to foster new ways of thinking, to redefine our focus, and to expand our reach.
These are our stories: stories of partnership, innovation, growth, new discovery, and, most importantly, of lives changed.
