TOXFIN™ – An Effective Tool for Mycotoxin Management in Swine Production

Importance of Mycotoxin Control Programs

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by fungi or moulds that display widely-varying toxic properties (carcinogenic, immunosuppressive, hepatotoxic, nephrotoxic, neurotoxic, etc.) in humans and animals. The risk of mycotoxins entering the feed chain is almost unavoidable, as they contaminate almost all agricultural ingredients, consequently affecting swine health and performance. For example, the presence of zearalenone and deoxynivalenol in sow and piglets feed are causing specific symptoms like swollen vulvas and vomiting respectively.

A mycotoxin analysis on different raw materials and finished feeds provides fundamental information, allowing the correct implementation of the most cost-effective control actions. By taking preventative measures and using the right mycotoxin adsorbent you can protect your business and animals from the negative effects of mycotoxins. Choosing the right mycotoxin adsorbent can be a burden, but doesn’t need to be one. Their efficacy can be easily evaluated by an in vitro mycotoxin adsorption test, as a first screening method.   

TOXFIN - When in vitro Tests are Confirmed by in vivo Toxicokinetic Studies

A first screening method to evaluate the binding efficacy of a mycotoxin binder is an in vitro adsorption test. A protocol for a mycotoxin adsorption test was developed by Kemin’s Customer Lab Services (CLS) to screen the efficacy of adsorbents guaranteeing the efficacy of TOXFIN. According to the European Food Safety Authority, the efficacy of mycotoxin-detoxifying agents should also be investigated based on in vivo trials, measuring specific parameters such as the toxin or a metabolite of the toxin in plasma or other tissues of the animal. Therefore, toxicokinetic studies with TOXFIN were performed in piglets in addition to the in vitro adsorption tests to confirm that TOXFIN effectively adsorbs the mycotoxins in the gastro-intestinal tract preventing the absorption of the toxins into the bloodstream, negatively affecting animal health.
