KEMZYME® - Understanding Raw Material Variability

While numerous experts focused their research on better understanding the non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) fraction of wheat and the effect of enzymes, there were still gaps in scientific knowledge and practical applications. Therefore Kemin sponsored a Ph.D. study: “Interactions between non-starch polysaccharides from wheat and feed enzymes – effect on digestion in broilers” in order to further elucidate this important industry topic. The study’s thesis was successfully defended by Kemin Industries’ senior research associate in Europe and Ph.D. student, Natasja Smeets on March 6, 2015 at the Catholic University of Leuven.

A Look at the Study

The Ph.D. thesis determined the variability range in NSP composition between different wheat batches used across Europe. The data indicated an enormous variation between wheat grains. According to the research, the level of soluble NSP can range between 0.8 and 1.8%, whereas the level of insoluble NSP was shown to vary between 5.8% and 9.6%.

In a second step of the study, Smeets studied the impact of these variations in NSP levels on the nutrient digestibility of broilers. The last step of the research was designed to gain more insights on the interaction between the NSP fraction and feed enzymes.

A better understanding of xylanase requirements and the mode of action for optimal performance was an important outcome of this study. As a result, the Kemin research team developed KEMZYME eXtend, a premium xylanase extended with an activated carrier suitable for all poultry species.

“This Ph.D. study confirms the company’s obligation to better understand the challenges of NSP fractions caused in animal nutrition,” said Filip Nuyens, research and development director of the animal nutrition and health division in Europe. “This is just a portion of the research we do globally to demonstrate our commitment to delivering the best nutritional enzyme solutions in the industry.” KEMZYME eXtend uses a unique xylanase that has several distinctive features. In addition to the traditional xylanase enzyme effect, which breaks down the soluble xylans in order to reduce the viscosity of digesta, KEMZYME eXtend also releases additional nutrients such as starch and proteins by breaking open the aleurone and endosperm cell walls. Consequently, the product contains both energy and crude protein values that make it an interesting matrix value used in re-formulations. KEMZYME eXtend is also pellet stable up 95°C.

Kemin's Unique Solutions

Kemin provides unique solutions to enhance the utilization of today´s complex feed with KEMZYME eXtend.

As feed formulations vary in different parts of the world, KEMZYME products are diverse and are designed to target these regional needs. This makes KEMZYME different than other enzyme products where one product needs to fit every situation in all parts of the world. For example, KEMZYME Plus is an ideal solution for complex substrates which require multiple enzyme activities for a complete solution, whereas KEMZYME eXtend targets the single xylanase applications.
