KEM SAN™ Liquid

A clean, safe water supply is a necessity for healthy animals because water is involved in almost all aspects of an animal’s metabolism. Water can easily be contaminated by pathogens, including Salmonella, E.coli, Pasteurella, Streptococcus and Clostridium, which can compromise animal health and performance.

Farmers are under severe pressure to rear healthy livestock in conditions and time frames that are less than forgiving. By applying good farming practices, hygiene and water line management together with advanced feed supplementation, farmers can control diseases and ensure the health and optimum growth potential of their animals.

Kemin has spent years researching and developing the supplements that can assist farmers in doing this. And what we have found is that a healthy intestinal tract is critical to ensuring an animal’s health. Pathogenic bacteria for example Salmonella and E.coli live inside the intestinal tract of animals and under the correct conditions can cause disease, economic losses and large scale food safety risks.

Kemin’s three-gear holistic approach to ensuring intestinal health through the improvement of an animal’s intestinal microbiota, intestinal integrity and intestinal immunity is fundamental to obtaining their optimum genetic potential and limit economic losses.

Taking one step back, water contaminated by pathogens such as Salmonella, E.coli, Pasteurella, Streptococcus and Clostridium can (and should be) prevented. And Kemin has the answer: KEM SAN™.

The Role KEM SAN™ Plays in Improving the Intestinal Health of Production Animals

An acid is a chemical species which causes the pH of a solution to drop. Due to this fact, acids have historically been used to lower the pH in water, creating an unsuitable environment for pathogens to grow and survive.

KEM SAN™ Liquid is a unique combination of propionic, acetic and other organic acids balanced by their individual pKas over an optimal pH range. This blend of organic acids is proven to kill a broad spectrum of pathogenic bacteria in livestock and poultry’s drinking water and has been shown to reduce biofilm and mineral deposits in water lines.

How KEM SAN™ works

Organic acids are effective against a broad range of pathogenic bacteria. The bactericidal activity is a four-step process:

  1. Intact (undissociated) acids passively diffuse across the bacterial cell wall and across the lipid inner membranes.
  2. Once inside the bacterial cell, organic acids dissociate, increasing the levels of H+ ions (protons).
  3. Bacterial intracellular pH drops rapidly.
  4. In order to stabilise the pH, the bacterium attempts to remove the excess H+ and in doing so depletes its energy reserves. Depletion of energy and low pH within the bacterial cell causes the bacterium to die.

The Benefits of KEM SAN™

  • In vitro data shows inhibition to a broad range of pathogenic bacteria
  • Assists with optimum health and performance during livestock production
  • Reduces and removes biofilm and algae residues when applied between herd cycles or flocks
  • Buffers to a pH of 4.7 – 5.7, which optimises the effectiveness of chlorine, bacterial control and overall handling by farm personnel
