The World Food Prize®
Kemin has been an active supporter and participant in The World Food Prize, started by Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug, ever since The World Food Prize headquarters returned to Des Moines in 1990. The World Food Prize honors outstanding individuals who have made vital contributions to improving the quality, quantity or availability of food throughout the world. The World Food Prize also draws attention and resources to the challenges still facing food security worldwide.
World Food Programme®
Organized the very same year Kemin began operations (1961), the World Food Programme (WFP) pursues a vision of the world in which every man, woman and child has access at all times to the food needed for an active and healthy life. Kemin has been working with the World Food Programme for several years, sharing its understanding of how to prevent the degradation of food. As the number of food emergencies continues to rise, Kemin scientists and quality assurance staff are working harder than ever to help the World Food Programme deliver food that provides the maximum nutritional value despite less than desirable storage and transportation conditions.
In addition to funding two food technologist positions in the WFP’s food quality department, Kemin employs a scientist dedicated to conducting applied research studies focused on improving the quality and shelf life of food supplied through the WFP. WFP suppliers make fortified blended foods by combining staple foods, like corn, soy and rice, with a vitamin and mineral mix. These often experience extreme conditions, including lengthy transportation and storage periods as well as significant temperature changes, making shelf life stability a top priority. Kemin scientists conduct tests to simulate these conditions and provide recommendations for how to extend the current shelf life. The data gathered in our lab is also used by the WFP staff to address quality issues with WFP suppliers.
Our training and development teams are working closely with WFP staff to develop an adult training program. The effort involves developing electronic learning resources and providing instruction for WFP trainers. Kemin scientists are also working with the WFP to develop food quality and safety trainings that will provide WFP staff and quality inspectors with additional tools and resources to evaluate the quality of foods manufactured for the WFP.
New Product Development
As nutrition continues to evolve, so must the products supplied through the WFP. As a result, the WFP is investing in research and development to identify new forms of delivering food that is high in nutritional content. Kemin scientists are working alongside the WFP to develop formulations for new food forms to ensure new products maintain the highest quality possible while delivering the full nutritional value.
Project Laser Beam
Kemin is supporting Project Laser Beam, a five year, $50 million public-private partnership that seeks to eradicate child malnutrition. Kemin researchers are working with the WFP to conduct shelf life tests of the high energy biscuits provided to children in Bangladesh, an area with incredibly high rates of child malnutrition. Through our research, we will recommend improvements in the raw materials, production, packaging and delivery of the biscuits to ensure the full nutritional value is consumed.
