FloraGLO® Lutein FOR Eye Health

Your eyesight is precious and indispensable. It allows you to see your loved ones, visualize ideas and enjoy every moment to the fullest. But as you age, your visual health may naturally decline. Various eye conditions, including cataracts or age related macular degeneration (AMD) may also appear overtime due to family history or environmental factors.

FloraGLO Lutein is a natural ingredient for vision supplements. Backed by over 20 years of research, it's one of the safest, most trusted lutein brands. FloraGLO Lutein is an extract from marigold flowers, providing the same absorbable form of lutein found in common foods, such as kale, spinich, corn and peppers.

How does FloraGLO Lutein work IN THE EYE?

Look for FloraGLO Lutein in vision supplements

An eye health supplement containing FloraGLO Lutein is the simplest way to get the naturally-sourced lutein you need each day.

What is lutein?

Lutein, often paired with zeaxanthin, is an important nutrient used by the body to protect the eyes and keep them performing at their best. These nutrients are part of a class called carotenoids, found in the human diet in a variety of fruits and vegetables5, namely dark leafy greens. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only dietary nutrients selectively deposited in the eye6, specifically, in the macula lutea, to create a protective layer known as macular pigment.7-8 This protective layer is the eye’s natural defense against the potentially damaging blue light from phone screens, computers, LED lights and sunlight.

Lutein and zeaxanthin protect the eyes by acting as powerful antioxidants to prevent damage from free radicals.

The human body doesn't produce lutein or zeaxanthin on its own, and these nutrient levels can naturally decline with age - leaving your eyes unprotected and vulnerable.9 That's why it’s so important to replenish lutein and zeaxanthin levels daily through diet or supplementation.

Sources of lutein:

Green, leafy vegetables like spinach, kale or broccoli are some of the best dietary sources of lutein and zeaxanthin. But most Americans don't eat near enough of these green superfoods. In fact, the average American diet only provides about 1-2 mg of lutein and zeaxanthin.10

Why do you need lutein?

One of the main culprits that negatively impacts eye health over time is overexposure to harmful wavelengths of blue light. Blue light is a component of visible light and everyone is exposed to it. Nearly every source of light - natural or artificial - emits blue light.11-13 In fact, human eyes are exposed to blue light all day long, and at ever-increasing levels due to the prevalence of smartphones and tablets.13 The eyes can't filter blue light on their own, and overexposure may lead to poor vision.14-15

Regardless of age, supplementing with lutein today can protect the eyes for a lifetime.

FloraGLO Lutein for brain health and infant development

Protection for the Developing Infant Brain

As early as 17 to 22 weeks of gestation, lutein is present in the retina of the fetus.16-17 During pregnancy, lutein levels in the mother's bloodstream increases while other carotenoids remain constant.18 The same differential pattern for increased lutein over other carotenoids is also present in cord blood and breast milk, indicating lutein is part of the optimal nutrition necessary for the developing baby.19

Unfortunately, the typical diet often doesn't provide expectant mothers with all of the nutrients her developing baby's brain needs for healthy development.10 Lutein's importance for infant development may be related to its well-known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Prenatal and infant nutrition products containing FloraGLO Lutein can support nutritional needs for neural development and protection.

Children and Cognitive Performance

New research points to lutein's role in cognitive performance support during childhood. Macular pigment optical density (MPOD) -  the measure of lutein status in the eye - and cognitive performance20, memory21 and academic achievement22 may be correlated.

Adult Brain Health

Brain functions like processing speed and working memory can decline with age.23 Lutein may help individuals maintain brain health and function by protecting the brain from oxidative stress and inflammation. Two recent studies24, 25 assessed the effects of FloraGLO Lutein on cognitive function in older, healthy adults. The studies found lutein supports brain health in an aging population by:

  • Supporting cognitive flexibility24
  • Enhancing complex attention24
  • Aiding blood flow to regions of the brain25
  • Increasing neural activation25

As of today, there are 8 publications of interventional studies investigating the effects of lutein supplementation on cognition in healthy adults using FloraGLO Lutein.26-33 The earliest interventional studies used FloraGLO lutein supplementation ranges between 8 and 12 mg per day.26-28 All the interventional studies published since 2017 report using 10 mg FloraGLO lutein along with 2 mg zeaxanthin.29-33

From Flower to Formula

Kemin uses only the best growing and harvesting practices to cultivate its elite dietary ingredients. Our proprietary lutein manufacturing process has been developed and refined over the last 20 years.

Our marigold flowers are grown in India, meticulously handpicked, dried, and extracted resulting in marigold oleoresin which is further processed into unesterified (free) FloraGLO Lutein.

Each step of the manufacturing process is carefully controlled to ensure that the naturally-sourced lutein is not degraded, maintaining its quality and consistency.

Kemin's Commitment To Lutein Science

FloraGLO was the first lutein brand introduced into the global marketplace and has maintained its status as the gold standard for over two decades. FloraGLO was the chosen lutein ingredient in the largest lutein supplementation trial to date, the prestigious Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2) by the National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute.34

Science backed, not borrowed

The efficacy of FloraGLO Lutein is unparalleled, as compared with other lutein brands and as demonstrated in human clinical trials time and time again. The global vitamin and dietary supplement market relies on clinical evidence in order to differentiate products in the marketplace. It's critical for manufacturers to formulate with ingredients that have clinical evidence to substantiate health benefits, which is why so many choose FloraGLO.

Superior absorption and bioavailability

FloraGLO Lutein is clinically-tested to increase and maintain MPOD (the measurement of macular pigment density in the macula.) FloraGLO Lutein is the same free-form found in common fruits and vegetables. Because it is free form, it is more easily absorbed by the body.

FloraGLO Lutein in powder form is produced with DSM's Actilease® microencapsulation technology, a proprietary process that combines superior bioavailabity, excellent stability and very low extrusion losses - providing lower overages and smaller tablets.

Not all lutein is the same

Researchers, eye care professionals and leading supplement manufacturers from around the globe rely on the consistent quality, safety and proven efficacy profile of FloraGLO Lutein.
