HOW TO CONTROL SALMONELLA PREVALENCE IN PRODUCTION ANIMALS

The presence of Salmonella in production animals is considered a risk factor for Salmonella contamination of meat and eggs. From an animal health and human food safety perspective, interventions to keep the prevalence of Salmonella low are therefore critical.

The successful control of Salmonella on livestock farms is dependent on a number of things. Good farming and hygiene management combined with regular testing and treatment of positive flocks can make all the difference. It is important to note that because Salmonella lives inside the intestinal tract of animals, developing and managing good intestinal health in production animals can also drastically decrease the risk of Salmonella.

The Role FormaXOL™ Plays in Production Animals’ Intestinal Health

How FormaXOL™ works

  • Microencapsulated Citric Acid and Ca Formate (source of Formic Acid), and cinnamon, oregano, thyme and capsicum essential oils.
  • Results in the slow and sustained release of the active ingredients throughout the intestinal tract.
  • Essential oils increase the bacterial cell wall permeability for protons and K+ ions, thus forming an ion gradient across the bacterial cell wall. This results in the impairment of the essential process in the bacterial cell, which leads to the death of the bacterial cell.
  • Undissociated formic acid penetrates the Salmonella cell wall and dissociates inside the bacterial cell releasing H+ ions. The increase in intracellular concentration of H+ ions disrupts the normal cell physiology (via reduction of intracellular pH and anion accumulation) resulting in bacterial cell death.
