Fats and Oils in Animal Feed

Feed oils and fats are essential ingredients in feed formulations used in the poultry, pig and aquaculture industries. A wide variety of different lipid sources are used in animal feed applications, including vegetable oils (soybean, rapeseed, palm oil and palm free fatty acids), fat blends, animal fats, fish oil, and many other products, sometimes depending on local availability. Feed fats are excellent sources of dietary metabolisable energy for the animal but there is a large variation in composition, quality, feeding value, and price among sources.

The nutritional parameters of oils and fats, such as digestibility and absorption, are related to their oxidative quality. Oils and fats are especially prone to quality degradation caused by the lipid autoxidation process, which lowers the nutritional value of the feed and will result in reduced animal performance, impairment of animal health and increased production cost.

The harmful effects of the oxidation process can be prevented through the addition of antioxidant compounds. Antioxidant protection helps to ensure that animals receive the quality feed that was formulated by the nutritionist for maximum growth and profitability.

When treating ingredients, identifying the correct antioxidant for your application can be the difference between success and failure. The Kemin range of antioxidants are formulated to provide the best synergistic blend of antioxidants for the various applications.

Enhancing Fat Digestion and Absorption

Fat is an important and expensive nutrient in animal feeds. The metabolism and absorption of fat is of great economic significance in maintaining profitable animal production. The ability of any fat to be absorbed is a function of the ease at which it can be emulsified to make fat emulsion droplets and then micelles. Regardless of the fat source, emulsification or the interaction of fats with the biosurfactants, bile and phospholipids is integral to absorption.

LYSOFORTE™ Booster Dry* is a biosurfactant which is naturally rich in lysolecithin. Lysolecithins are molecules that can act as powerful biosurfactants to reduce fat micelle size and improve the absorption of fat from the small intestine resulting in better animal performance and feed efficiency. The improved weight gains and energy sparing effects of LYSOFORTE allow it to work with feed reformulation to lower feed costs while keeping the same animal performance. This approach increases the profitability of production.
