Prof. Charles G. Schwab

Prof. Charles Schwab has been a Professor of Nutrition in the Department of Animal and Nutritional Sciences at the University of New Hampshire since 1975. Recognized for his research on amino acid nutrition of dairy cattle, Prof. Schwab has made over 100 presentations at dairy nutrition conferences and workshops in the last 10 years on the application of advances in amino acid and protein nutrition for more efficient use of feed protein for milk production. He was a member of the committee responsible for publishing NRC (2001), Nutrient Requirements for Dairy Cattle. In 2003 Prof. Schwab founded the Ruminant Feed Analysis Consortium, an organization that has recently become the Feed Analysis Consortium, Inc. (FeedAC) and has been incorporated as a non-profit organization.

In addition to his teaching, research and farm coordinator responsibilities, Schwab has provided leadership to several new initiatives at UNH, including a restructuring of the animal sciences curriculum, development of the Nutritional Sciences Program, development of the departmental PhD Program, construction of a new Dairy Teaching and Research Center, and establishment of the New England Regional Dairy Program. He currently leads an effort to establish a 300-acre organic dairy research farm at UNH, a farm that will be used by researchers and educators throughout the North East to conduct organic dairy systems research and educate a new generation of young farmers in ecologically-based farming practices.

In recognition of these efforts, Prof. Schwab received the American Dairy Science Association AFIA Dairy Nutrition Research Award in 2005. In 2006 he received the Excellence in Public Service Award at the University of New Hampshire.
