Europe

Belgium is situated in western Europe. Although its surface area of 32,545 km2 makes it a rather small country, its location has made it the economic and urban nerve center of Europe.

There are three communities living in Belgium and they all share the same flag. The Flemish who speak Dutch, live in the north of the country and are the most numerous. Then there are the Walloons in the south, who speak French. Brussels itself is a bilingual region; however, most of its inhabitants are French-speaking. Finally, in the extreme east of the country there is a small German-speaking community.

The city of Herentals, the historical capital of the "Kempen", was founded in 1209. Herentals is located in the typical green environment of the "Kempen", in the center of the province of Antwerp. This central location makes the city easily accessible.

Tourists who visit Herentals will be amazed at the city's historic monuments, which include the clothmakers' hall from 1430, the beguinage of 1590, and the enclosed convent of 1410.

"Belgium, Heart of Europe" is not just a catch phrase: the geographical center of the 15 countries of the European Union is located in Belgium.
