Date: 2/21/2007 3:22 pm
When requested by the Iowa Department of Education to participate in the establishment of a core curriculum for Iowa students through the Model Core Curriculum Project, Alissa Jourdan, Kemin Industries Senior Scientist Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, readily accepted the responsibility. This is quite an honor for Kemin as there was very few industry people asked to participate. The goal given to the Project Lead Team was to define and collaborate with subcommittees in identifying the essential content and skills of a world-class core curriculum. The team was also asked to present its findings to the State Board of Education in partial fulfillment of SF 245. The initial phase of model core curriculum work focused on the areas of literacy, mathematics, and science.

The intent of the Model Core Curriculum Project is twofold:
• To ensure that all Iowa students have access to a rigorous and relevant curriculum to prepare them for success in post-secondary education and the emerging global economy.
• To provide a tool for Iowa educators to use to assure that essential subject matter is being taught and essential knowledge and skills are being learned.
